With plans to renovate their history laden family home the clients of Mānuka Hill were looking for a relaxing, big and open family space where the kitchen is the heart of the home. We responded with a strong intervention, punching through the existing home and creating a juxtaposition between the old and the new. This division is mirrored on the interior where the programme of the home is clearly defined into public and private spaces.
Drawing on the form of a historic glass house, which used to be situated down on the lawn, we flipped the weight of the structure on its head. An aesthetically weighty upper volume perches above a light glass plinth, the heavy form a nod to the clients speciality in concrete work.
